Prabhulal Dwivedi with wife, Damyantiben

Kavi Shree Prabhulalbhai lost his first wife very early and remained a widower till 1927. “Ek Abala”, which was staged in 1927, coincided with his father Dayarambhai urging him to marry Damyantiben. The alliance saw his own “Vadilon na Vanke” play out in real life. The play was about an eruditeman marrying an illiterate woman.

Prabhulalbhai was blessed with five children. His son, Vinaykant Dwivedi took his legacy ahead by creating “Sambharna”, where he revived the memories of traditional thetre and also staged many of Prabhulalbhais plays. . This was done at a time when the last surviving tardiotional gujarato theatre Deshi Natak Samaj was already defunct.

In Mumbai, Kavi Prabhulalbhai stayed at Walkeshwar, where his neighbourShethShree Laxmidas Kalyanji, also known as Annabhai, became his close friend.
